FEATURE DOCUMENTARY
A murder trial that shaped the fate of a people, the history of a nation and the borders of the world.
In 1922, two young Inuit hunters were charged with multiple murders – including an RCMP officer. The Canadian government established an unprecedented court on Herschel Island in the high Arctic in order to assert its dominion over the people who had lived in the North for generations and fly its flag over the prized Northwest Passage trade route.
The case hinged on a questionable investigation wrought with racial bias and inconsistencies – a master class in judicial error. The Crown appears to have premeditated the verdict and the accused were swifty hanged in the gallows.
The trial was a national news sensation but not a fleeting headline. Instead, the convictions set a precedent that would violate the autonomy, cultures and natural laws of First Nations peoples across Canada for decades, profoundly impacting generations to come.
A century after the executions, the feature documentary, Herschel, circles back to examine the forensics of the case, the colonial constructs at play and the consequences we all must face.
